What Do You Really Mean When You Say, "I AM FINE"

Ā

Do you know that ā€œI am fineā€ is the most told lie in the English language? It is usually used when someone is, in fact, not fine but they say ā€œI am fineā€ because they donā€™t want to burden others and itā€™s easier to explain than whatā€™s wrong, would you agree?

F.I.N.E is said to stand forĀ ā€œFeeling Insecure, Neurotic and Emotionalā€, and can also beĀ ā€œFeeling Iā€™m Nothing to Everyoneā€Ā orĀ ā€œFeeling Inadequate, Needing Encouragementā€. Whatever your definition of FINE may be most of us would just lie and say ā€œI am FINEā€, because itā€™s an easy way out.

Then why do we say ā€œI am fineā€ when clearly, weā€™re not:

  • Not sure of what you really feel
  • Pretending to be okay
  • To avoid conflicts
  • Scared to tell what you're really feeling

Ā

Only those who identify with these feelings can truly understand the agony behind the words ā€œI am fine.ā€

The next time someone asks how you are, think about the response youā€™re already anticipating. What if we didnā€™t settle for ā€œfineā€? What if we stop, take a moment, and answer with true sincerity how Iā€™m doing? Or better yet, tell them how youā€™re feeling. We could all benefit from slowing down and honestly evaluating how we are doing.
